The deeper concern that deserves a fair hearing is one of governance and transparency, not just biology. Alphabet has not announced specific release sites. The underlying EPA application dossier has not been made widely accessible to the general public in plain language. When a corporation the size of Google — with enormous financial and lobbying resources — seeks regulatory approval to alter the insect ecology of two of the most populous states in the country, the question of who was consulted and who benefits is entirely legitimate. Residents in targeted communities have a reasonable expectation to know where, when, and why these releases would occur before they happen, not after. Whether the EPA’s public comment process is sufficient to meet that standard is a question both the left and the right should be asking.
